VM Work Related Skills VCE Units 3 & 4 Practice Question 6c – Workplace culture characteristics

Q6c VM Work Related Skills Workplace culture characteristics Unit 3 - Area Of Study 1

Kai has recently started a casual job at MetroPrint, a small printing and design business with 14 staff. The workplace has a mix of long-term employees and new starters, and the busiest time is between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm when urgent orders come in.

In Kai’s first two weeks, the following situations occur:

  • The supervisor regularly praises staff who stay back without being asked and says, “That’s what we do here if we want to be seen as committed.”
  • Team meetings are short and mostly involve the supervisor giving instructions. Staff rarely ask questions because “it just slows things down.”
  • A new employee, Samira, asks for the safety procedure for using the guillotine cutter. A co-worker replies, “You’ll figure it out; I was never shown either.”
  • A staff group chat includes jokes about “who’s too soft for deadlines.” Kai notices a meme making fun of a colleague who requested a roster change to attend a family medical appointment.
  • The lunchroom noticeboard includes an “Employee Values” poster that lists: Respect, Safety, Inclusion, and Work-life balance, but Kai has not seen these values discussed.

Kai wants to do well at the job but is unsure what is normal workplace behaviour and what could lead to an unsafe or unhealthy workplace culture.
