Q6a VM Work Related Skills Role of advocacy organisations Unit 3 - Area Of Study 1

FreshBite Foods is a medium-sized food manufacturing business that supplies pre-packed salads to supermarkets. The business employs production workers, forklift drivers and quality control staff.

After a change to rosters, some employees report increased fatigue and difficulty managing caring responsibilities. Management says the new roster is needed to meet customer demand and reduce overtime costs. Several staff members are unsure who can support them to raise concerns, negotiate changes, or understand their rights and responsibilities.

Two organisations become involved:

  • The Food Manufacturing Employees Union (FMEU) contacts workers and offers to meet with them.
  • The Victorian Food Producers Association (VFPA), an employer association, offers management advice on managing the change and communicating with staff.

The workplace has a Health and Safety Representative (HSR) and a consultative committee, but neither has been used much in the past.
