Skyline Events Co. is preparing for a three-day regional sports carnival. The operations manager needs extra staff for set-up, daily gate operations, and pack-down.

Four people are engaged under different arrangements:

  • Riley is asked to work set shifts at the main gate (e.g. 7:00 am–3:00 pm) following Skyline’s procedures, wearing a Skyline uniform, and using Skyline’s point-of-sale system. Riley is paid an hourly rate and is told not to send someone else in their place.
  • Morgan runs a registered business, “Morgan Tech Services”. Morgan provides and installs temporary Wi-Fi routers and a small camera system. Morgan quotes a fixed price of \$3,600 for the job, uses their own tools and van, issues an invoice after completion, and can decide the order and method of work as long as it is ready by 6:00 pm on day 1.
  • Tahlia is a first-year apprentice electrician employed by a subcontractor working on the site. Tahlia is supervised by a licensed electrician, attends required training as part of the apprenticeship, and is learning tasks while doing paid work.
  • Ben is a Certificate III hospitality trainee working at the food court. Ben is employed by Skyline, completes structured on-the-job training, and has a training plan that lists skills to be achieved over 12 months.

During the event, Skyline’s manager tells Morgan to wear a Skyline shirt and to remain on site all day “just in case”, and also asks Morgan to train Riley on basic Wi-Fi troubleshooting.

Unit 3 Overview

This unit focuses on the core elements of a healthy, collaborative, inclusive and harmonious workplace and is separated into three main areas: wellbeing, culture and the employee-employer relationship; workplace relations; and communication and collaboration. Students will learn how to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and employers, understanding the characteristics of a positive workplace culture and its relationship to business success. They will investigate key areas relating to workplace relations including methods for determining pay and conditions, workplace bullying, workplace discrimination, workplace harassment and dispute resolution. Students will discover how teamwork and communication skills contribute to healthy, collegiate and productive workplaces.

Workplace responsibilities and rights

In this area of study students will explore workplace relations, including the National Employment Standards and methods of determining pay and conditions. They will consider the characteristics and legal consequences of workplace bullying, workplace discrimination and workplace harassment, and gain an overview of the common legal issues experienced in the workplace. Students will examine processes to address and resolve workplace disputes. On completion of this unit the student should be able to outline the National Employment Standards and methods for determining pay and conditions, explain the characteristics of workplace bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment, and outline the processes and legal consequences for breaches and analyse the personal ramifications that may follow.
