BrightCall has a team of 10 staff. Shifts are usually rostered between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm. Mina has been regularly rostered for three 6-hour shifts per week, usually starting at 11:30 am.
Last week, Mina asked her supervisor if she could change to morning shifts (e.g. 8:30 am to 2:30 pm) and have one day per fortnight to attend a training course that could lead to a higher-level role. The supervisor said: “We don’t do flexible arrangements here. If you want training you’ll have to do it in your own time. Also, some of the team have complained you ‘don’t fit in’ because you don’t join in the group chat.”
Two days later, Mina noticed her roster had been changed to two shifts per week, with more late finishes. Mina feels the group chat sometimes includes jokes about customers’ accents and that when she raised this once, a colleague told her to “stop being sensitive.”
