A community centre is creating a 3D-printed stand for a tablet.

The designer models the stand in a CAD app. The stand is made from two joined solids:

  • a rectangular prism (the base) with length 14 cm, width 9 cm and height 2 cm
  • a triangular prism (the support) sitting on top of the base

In the side view (lengthwise), the triangular cross-section of the support is a right triangle with:

  • base (along the 14 cm length) = 10 cm
  • height = 6 cm

The support has the same width as the base (9 cm). The support is positioned so that its 10 cm base sits fully on the top of the rectangular base.

The CAD app can automatically calculate volume and can also generate a “slice preview” that shows the cross-section area at a given width.
