VM Literacy VCE Units 3 & 4 Practice Question 6c – Oral communication features

Q6c VM Literacy Oral communication features Unit 4 - Area Of Study 1

You are the student spokesperson for a vocational pathway program at your school. A local community radio station has invited you to deliver a 90-second live advocacy pitch encouraging local employers to offer work placements to students.

During a practice run, your teacher makes the following observations:

  • You mostly look down at your notes and only glance up briefly.
  • Your speaking volume is clear, but your tone stays “flat” and the pace is very fast.
  • When you reach the key message (the benefit to employers), your intonation stays the same as the rest of the pitch.
  • Your shoulders are slightly hunched and your arms stay close to your body.
  • When you answer a follow-up question, you shift your weight from foot to foot and speak more quietly.

You want to improve your oral communication features so the pitch sounds confident and persuasive to an unfamiliar adult audience (radio listeners and employers).

Unit 4 Overview

In Unit 4 of VM Literacy students work through the areas of study 'Understanding and engaging with literacy for advocacy' and 'Speaking to advise or to advocate'.

Understanding and engaging with literacy for advocacy

In this area of study students will investigate, analyse and create content for the advocacy of self, a product or a community group of the student's choice, in a vocational or recreational setting. Students will research the differences between texts used for more formal or traditional types of advocacy, influence or promotion, as well as some of the forms that are increasingly being used in the digital domain for publicity and exposure. Students will consider which elements are important for creating a ‘brand' (including personal branding) and how different texts, images, products and multimedia platforms work together to produce one, central message to influence an audience. Students will compare and contrast the ways in which same message can be presented through different platforms and participate in discussions that consider the effectiveness of these messages, considering their purpose and the social and workplace values associated with them.
