Sociology VCE Units 3 & 4 Practice Question 1a – Opposition's use of power

Q1a Sociology Opposition's use of power Unit 4 - AOS 2

A student group called CleanAirNow is campaigning for a state government to introduce a legally enforceable cap on air pollution from a cluster of factories near a regional town. The movement is in the public campaigning stage and has gained attention through community meetings, petitions and peaceful rallies.

A coalition of factory owners and industry groups opposes the proposed cap. In response to the movement’s growing support, the coalition:

  • funds a series of advertisements claiming the cap will cause job losses and higher prices
  • pays for “independent” reports that question the health impacts of pollution and distributes them to local media
  • meets with government ministers and donates to major political parties
  • warns employees that participating in rallies could “damage the company’s reputation” and may affect future promotions
  • supports new council by-laws that restrict where protests can occur near industrial sites.

Assume the movement and its opposition are operating in a democratic society with legal protections for protest, but also laws regulating public order and workplace conduct.
