Sociology VCE Units 3 & 4 Practice Question 2b – Responses to practices

Q2b Sociology Responses to practices Unit 3 - AOS 2

A large metropolitan hospital introduces a new uniform policy after staff raised concerns about “professional presentation” and “patient comfort”. The policy states that all visible religious and cultural items must be removed while on shift, including head coverings, visible religious jewellery, and culturally specific garments. Management argues the policy will create a “neutral, equal workplace” and reduce complaints.

After the policy is announced, a group of nurses from a minority ethnic community report that their cultural and religious practices are being treated as a problem to be managed. They also report an increase in hostile comments from some colleagues and patients (for example, being told to “leave culture at home” and that “we do things the Australian way here”). A staff survey conducted two months later shows that reported incidents of verbal harassment have increased, while the hospital’s HR report notes a small decrease in formal patient complaints about “appearance”. The hospital is now considering whether to keep the policy, modify it, or replace it with an alternative approach.

Unit 3 Overview

In this unit, students explore expressions of culture and ethnicity within Australian society in two different contexts – Australian Indigenous cultures, and ethnicity in relation to migrant groups. Students critically examine the historical suppression and increasing public awareness of Australian Indigenous cultures, and investigate ethnicity as a key sociological category, considering how ethnic identities are formed, experienced, and shaped by various forces.

Ethnicity

Students examine the sociological concepts of race and ethnicity, the process of othering, and the theory of cultural hybridity. They investigate Australia’s ethnic diversity, multiculturalism, factors influencing belonging and inclusion, and the ethical implications of research into ethnic groups, including a case study of a specific ethnic group.
