Q6b VM Work Related Skills Pros and cons of industry growth levels Unit 1 - Area Of Study 1

Sienna is a Year 11 student choosing a pathway for work placement next term. She has narrowed her options to three entry-level roles in different industries in her local region.

A careers blog classifies these industries by projected employment growth over the next five years:

Industry Growth classification Example entry-level role Notes from the blog
Print and newspaper publishing Low-growth Production assistant “Stable for some workers, but fewer new roles each year.”
Building and construction Medium-growth Trainee site administration “Steady demand; work can vary with interest rates and seasons.”
Aged care and disability support High-growth Support worker trainee “Strong growth; requires ongoing training and clearances.”

Sienna also finds a government labour market dashboard that provides this additional information:

Industry Projected change in total jobs (5 years) Typical employment conditions (local) Training/entry requirements (typical)
Print and newspaper publishing -6% Mostly part-time or casual; some roles are specialist Short on-the-job training; limited vacancies
Building and construction +7% Mix of full-time and casual; project-based work White Card; traineeships possible
Aged care and disability support +18% Shift work common; mix of part-time and full-time Certificate-level training; police check; vaccinations may be required

Sienna wants to start earning money quickly but also wants her choice to support long-term career opportunities. She is deciding how much weight to give to the blog versus the government dashboard when comparing these three options.
